MJ makes its world premiere on Broadway at the Neil Simon Theatre. MJ hits New York with direction and choreography by Tony award winner Christopher Wheeldon, who created the exhilarating dances for An American In Paris on Broadway.
The MJ musical is written by Lynn Nottage, with a story that is set to shed fresh light and let audiences in on the soul behind “The Man in the Mirror.” Nottage is a two-time Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright and a Tony Award nominee for her acclaimed play Sweat, and now she turns her eye towards Jackson’s unique and complex legacy.
With astonishing dances, unforgettable songs, and a cast of 22, MJ on Broadway gives a galvanizing new look at the life and times of one of the greatest entertainers in history.
- MJ: The Musical was originally slated to begin Broadway performances in July 2020, but was postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
- Book writer Lynn Nottage has stated that MJ will focus on a specific period of Jackson’s life — his hugely successful “Dangerous” tour in the early 1990s — rather than attempting to cover the singer’s whole career.
- MJ creatives Nottage and Wheeldon describe MJ as an in-depth look at Jackson’s life and creative process, and not a jukebox musical. “You will leave with a better understanding of who he was as a human being,” Nottage told The New York Times.
- According to set designer Derek McLane, the show will frequently transport audiences “into Michael’s mind — his memories and dreams,” including a flashy streetscape design dotted with neon and fire escapes which McLane unveiled in March 2020.
